James Lewis

James Lewis specializes in Decoy Carving and Waterfowl Art. Growing up on Harkers Island, NC where he still resides today and the surrounding area of Core Sound and Cape Lookout has played a major impact in his life and career.
A waterfowl Hunter since he was 7 years old, his love for the outdoors and waterfowl has grown into an obsession ever since. He began carving decoys and shorebirds at the age of 12 out of Juniper (White Cedar) scraps left over from boat construction. Coming from a family of boat builders (also his occupation) the juniper scrap was readily available. He now Makes a Varity of Decoys out of wood, cork and canvas.
James has been into serious decoy carving for several years now in which he has won many Best of Show, 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place ribbons at different competitions throughout the country. He is also a member of the Core Sound Decoy Carvers Guild in which he currently serves on the Board of Directors, and is also the Show Chairman for the Core Sound Waterfowl Festival. He is also a Lifetime member of the International Waterfowl Carvers Association.
A self-taught Artist James also loves to do flat art as well. Though most of his paintings or drawings have only been done as gifts or donations he has done well in a few competitions. He has won the Core Sound Decoy Poster Competition twice 2004 and 2006 and placed second three times. James also took a 2nd in 2007 and 3rd in 2008 in an International Waterfowl Poster Competition. His paintings often include the Cape Lookout Light House, Duck Blinds or the old style Work Boats found around Core Sound.
